The role familiarized in the first Spider-Man series by James Franco has since been turned over to Dane DeHaan, star of 2012′s Chronicle. In an interview with Coming Soon, DeHaan was asked how Harry Osborne’s privileged upbringing distinguishes him from other characters the actor has played. DeHaan said:

“First of all, ‘Chronicle’ was about a kid with an abusive father…Obviously with Harry Osborn, the privilege of it is another dynamic. The relationship Harry has with Norman is a different dynamic. Every son has a relationship with their father, whether that father is there or not, and that always has an effect on the person whether they admit it or not. There’s a lot of different ways those relationships are complicated.”

It’s going to be really tough for me to let go of James Franco’s performance when I watch DeHaan take his shots as Harry Osborne (mostly because I am a Franco fan). Regardless of my initial bias, James Franco and Tobey Maguire had a unique chemistry on-screen. I will be watching and judging (harshly) to see if a similar chemistry is built between Dane and Andrew (Garfield, who plays Spider-Man).

Coming Soon also asked Dehaan if there was more to be mined from the Harry Osborne character than Franco did in the first Spider-Man series. DeHaan said:

“I dunno, I mean Franco did his thing, I’ll do my thing.”

Not even a few props for Franco? (Shakes Head)

Lastly, the new Harry Osborne was asked whether he would play Luke Skywalker in the new Star Wars Trilogy if offered the role, because he bears a resemblance to Mark Hamill. He said:

“My dad would really like that! My dad’s a really big ‘Star Wars’ fan. I’ve never really been a ‘Star Wars’ fan, though.”

He’s not a Star Wars fan? I didn’t like his responses during the interview but maybe that’s a good thing. It might make him just the kind of villain he eventually needs to be for The Amazing Spider-Man series.

DeHaan is also currently involved in Metallica’s 3D film: Metallica Through the Never.

Mr. DeHaan, all is forgiven.

Synopsis:

In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.

The film is directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci & Jeff Pinkner, with a previous draft by James Vanderbilt, and based on the Marvel Comic Book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.

The latest chapter in the Spider-Man story is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014.
